Aikido, as seen in the video above; is characterised by it's effective use of throws, locks, pins and strikes.

A skilled Aikido student blends with the force of an incoming attack, redirecting the aggression against the attacker, with little effort.

Aikido favours flowing movements and techniques, designed to unbalance opponents and neutralise the force of an attack.

Aikido differs from martial arts like Karate in that it focuses primarily on defence.

Aikido is a practical and effective martial art with it's techniques commonly being taught in place of jujitsu to police, security guards, and soldiers.

Unlike Judo, MMA or Boxing, Aikido is not a sport and does

not focus on competition.

Aikido was founded by the legendary martial artist Morihei Ueshiba (pictured above) in the early 20th Century and is strongly influenced by the martial arts and jujitsu forms of feudal Japan.

In particular Aikido combines both armed and unarmed techniques from the martial arts of the sword (Ken-jutsu) and staff (Jo-Jutsu), along with the martial arts techniques of Aiki-Jujutsu.
